Lorica Hamata
Time Period: 1st century BCE to 5th century CE
Location: Rome
Common Construction: Iron rings, sometimes bronze or brass

Lorica hamata is the Roman version of chain mail. Initially it was assigned to auxiliary troops, but by the 1st century AD it was standard issue. It is believed that the knowledge of chain mail was taken from the Celts, and over time the lorica hamata was improved upon, becoming longer in the sleeves and waist. The use of lorica segmentata supplanted but never entirely replaced lorica hamata within the Roman Empire, and by the 4th century it was abandoned and lorica hamata again became the standard.

Actually it was used before the first century, it was the most used armor of the legions since they were created, and after marian reforms(107 BC) almost all the soldiers of the legion used one.

Gilberto, thanks for the comment! I have heard that the lorica hamata was used as early as the 4th century BCE but I haven't found a reputable source to confirm. Can you send me a book title or ISBN# that verifies your comment?
