Alberich's Scourge
In the Norse saga, Nibelungenlied, Alberich is said to have armed himself with "helmet and rings of mail and in his hand a heavy scourge of gold." The dwarf, not knowing Siegfried was the rightful sovereign, swung his mighty scourge at him and shattered his shield. Siegfried had no desire to kill Alberich, so he sheathed his sword and grappled him with his bare hands, grabbed his beard and forced him to yield.
