Abisme's Enchanted Shield
In the 12th century French epic, Song of Roland, the saracen Abisme had an enchanted shield "wonderfully arrayed" with precious stones such as topaz, amethyst, and carbuncle, given to him by the Devil. He was slain by the Archbishop Turpin during the Battle of Roncevaux.
