Time Period: 3rd century BC to 4th century AD
Location: Rome

The galerus is a type of pauldron that protected the left shoulder of the retiarius. Some also covered the neck and lower part of the face. The retiarius was one of the gladiators that fought in the arena. Armed with a fuscina and a net, his lack of a shield allowed him greater protection on the left side in the form of a manica and the galerus. This was the only form of shoulder protection available to gladiators and only the retiarius was allowed to wear it.
