Crown of Ariadne

In Greek mythology, the crown of Ariadne was made by Hephaestus, and given to Aphrodite, who in turn gave it to Dionysus for her. It is adorned with nine gems that glitter like stars.

Ariadne was the daughter of King Minos of Crete. When Theseus came to Crete to slay the minotaur, Ariadne fell in love with him and agreed to help. Together they defeated the minotaur and Theseus took her on his ship back to Athens. However, Theseus stopped on the island of Naxos and here he left Ariadne and sailed away.

Some versions of the story indicate that Theseus was told to leave her here, because the god Dionysus found her and married her. He bestowed upon her a crown, and took her to Mount Olympus where her crown became the constellation Corona.
