Time Period: 15th-19th century
Location: Turkey
Common Construction: Steel

The kilij is a Turkish curved sword, similar to many of the swords in that part of the world derived from the original sabers used by the Mongols. However, the kilij flares out a bit towards the end of the blade, which is called a "yelman". This flare may be partly responsible for the exaggerated thickness in the way Middle Eastern swords are sometimes portrayed.
