In Irish mythology, Croderg ("Red-Socketed") is the venomous spear of Druimderg son of Dolor, an heirloom of his Clan Rudraige. Caisel Clumach, the king of Norway, had invaded Ireland and the two armies met at the battle of Ventry. Caisel had a "venomous shield with red flames" which would set men on fire, and every man they touched would in turn be set on fire. None could stand before him in combat. As Caisel laughed in the faces of the Irish, Druimderg threw his venomous spear and struck the king of Norway in the mouth, killing him. As his shield fell to the earth, its magical flame was extinguished and the Irish went on to repel the invaders.
