Celtic Shield
Time Period: 6th century BC to 5th century AD
Location: Northern Europe
Common Construction: Wood

Celtic shield is a general term for shields of a variety of shapes and sizes used by the Celtic people from the 6th century BC until the end of their culture. Celtic shields are flat, and are constructed in an ovoid shape, with a wooden spindle shaped umbo. Individual shields can vary somewhat, but the general shape remains throughout the period of their use.

Celtic shields are made of planks of wood glued together. There is very little in the way of metal used in the shield. It is possible that the shield was covered with leather or fabric, but the ravages of time have destroyed any archaeological evidence to confirm this.
