The mancatcher was used to unhorse an armored knight from the saddle. The hooks were used to catch on the edges or joints of the knight's armor, and once unhorsed the top of the mancatcher was used to pin a limb or the neck. Once captured, the knight was kept as a prisoner of war or ransomed back to his family.

The mancatcher can also refer to a gaoler's necktrap. It was not used on the battlefield, rather it was used to corral already captured prisoners. Again, it is assumed that the prisoner was wearing armor, so the spikes were not lethal.
