Aventail (Also known as the Camail)
Time Period: 14th-15th century
Location: Northern and Western Europe
Common Construction: Steel

The aventail developed in order to complement the basinet. Instead of a full coif, the aventail is a chain mail neck guard that is attached to the basinet using vervelles. The use of the aventail and other forms of chain mail armor steadily fell in popularity as it was replaced by stronger plated armors.

In France, the aventail was known as a camail. The two terms describe the same piece of armor.
