Dao is a general term for single edged chopping and slashing swords in China. In everyday usage, Dao means knife. In the Western world they are often called broadswords due to their wide blades, but even in Europe the term broadsword is only in comparison to the thin bladed rapier. They have little in common with European weapons, although there is some speculation that the falchion may have developed from the dao.
