Baselard (also known as a Basilard)
Time Period: 15th-16th century
Location: Europe
Common Construction: Steel

The baselard is a 15th century Swiss blade of varying length with a characteristic "I" shaped hilt. It was never officially adopted as military issue, so its acquisition by soldiers and civilians was informal and a standard size and shape never developed. Whether the blade is classified as a dagger or a short sword can only be determined on a case by case basis, the term baselard does not refer to either specifically.
