Kunai
Time Period: 13th century to present
Location: Japan
Common Construction: Iron
The kunai is not actually a weapon; it is more of a gardening and construction tool. It is used to dig like a trowel or pry at things like a crowbar. As such, the edges are not sharpened, and sometimes even the tip is not sharpened. It is typically made of wrought iron and the kind of work it was used for would destroy a hardened steel blade fairly quickly.
When required, the kunai could be used as a stabbing instrument, possibly a throwing knife, or tied to a rope and used as a grappling hook or a ranged weapon similar to a rope dart. In the modern day, kunai are glamorized as a weapon of the ninja and are common in modern media. |
