Shishak
Time period: 12th-16th century
Location: Russia
Common Construction: Iron
The shishak is a Russian helmet with a domed shape and a spike on top. They were commonly worn with an aventail, and in some examples a chain mail covering was attached around the entire helmet covering both the front and back of the face.
"Shishak" is a Turkish or Hungarian word meaning "under-helmet". Evidence suggests that some shishaks could be worn underneath another helmet and over time the shishak developed into a full helmet in a fashion similar to the basinet. |
