Lamellar Armor
Lamellar armor is a general term for a type of scale armor. While scale armor consists of metal scales sewn onto a fabric or leather backing, the "lames" in lamellar armor are strung directly to each other with leather cords. This is generally considered a stronger design that is easier to maintain.
The individual lames which made up lamellar armor could be made out of any hard material, such as bronze, steel, bone, horn, etc. depending upon the time period and location in which it was made. The advantage comes from its ease of construction. Unlike plate armor, which is a large single sheet of metal, individual lames are far easier to make. Holes are then punched in the lames and they are sewn or laced together in such a way that they overlap. This approximates the protection of a unified material without requiring the metalworking skill to make it.
Lamellar armor was used in many cultures and in many time periods from the ancient Greeks all the way up to 18th century Tibet. |
